Every letter has a point of articulation and a set of qualities. Getting them wrong is not a stylistic matter. Every letter of the Arabic alphabet has a makhraj, a point of articulation, and a set of sifaat, qualities that govern how it is produced. These are not stylistic preferences handed down by taste. They are the mechanics of a text that was received orally and has been transmitted orally ever since.
When a reader substitutes one letter for a neighbouring one, the substitution is rarely neutral. The distinction between ﺱ and ﺹ, or between ﺕ and ﻁ, is the distinction between two different words. A reader who has never been corrected will not hear the difference, because the ear learns what the mouth practises.
The one who perfects his recitation will be a scribe among the Angels.

This is why tajweed is taught by a teacher rather than a book. A book can describe where the tongue sits. Only a teacher who has heard you recite can tell you that it is sitting somewhere else.
The chain matters for the same reason. An ijaazah is not a diploma; it is a licence to transmit, granted by someone who himself received it, back through a chain that does not break. When you learn from a teacher who holds one, you are not learning an interpretation. You are joining a line.
